Why "Alpenglow"?

When in a valley in some of the great mountains of the world, there comes a time each evening when the sun has set and the valley becomes dark. It stays this way for a short while before the darkness is fantastically interrupted by one of nature's most beautiful displays of artistry, as a burst of pinkish light reflects off the high peaks and fills the valley.
This phenomenon is called Alpenglow. Jim Ebert was visualizing this glorious new light after dark when he set out to create and name, Alpenglow Adventures. With all of mankind's incredible accomplishments in the outdoors, most of the world's most inspiring trails remain inaccessible to anyone who cannot walk the trails themselves.
Alpenglow Adventures is trying to bring new light to the world of outdoor accessibility, and change the very definition of what is possible for anyone. But there is no question that bringing this dream to life has been, and continues to be, a great challenge. Alpenglow Adventures needs help and support to continue accessing new places, inspiring more people, and challenging boundaries.

Why was Alpenglow Adventures founded?

Jim Ebert’s mother became paralyzed on the entire left side of her body due to a stroke following a complicated major surgery when she was in her early sixties. After the stroke Jim's mother used a wheelchair, but did not give up her love of experiencing the most scenic mountain regions throughout the world.
She accompanied Jim and his father and they led dozens of expeditions with the Iowa Mountaineers, Inc. (a former Univ of Iowa non-profit mountaineering club founded by Jim's parents), with their assistance.
After 16 years of such wonderful experiences and without seeing a single other person, using a wheelchair, accessing similar hikes, Jim was inspired to begin Alpenglow Adventures: the world's first hiking adventure program for those who cannot walk.

Why is our non-profit organization so unique?

We are the very first organization in the world that offers, as a regular service, hiking trips for people who cannot walk. And these very trips are to some of the greatest National Parks and on some of the most beautiful hikes in the world. We are also accessing many trails that have not been accessed by ANYONE who cannot walk.
We are offering our trips with an Open invitation, and an open registration process.
We truly believe that Earth's greatest natural experiences should be available to anyone. So come join us! And help us to rewrite the history books with every hike!
